Launching of the P.J. Adams

The P.J. Adams, Ampol's 32,250-ton super tanker, was launched at the BHP Whyalla Shipyards at around 8 a.m. on 10 January 1962. It was the largest ship ever built in Australia at that point, costing £4,000,000.

Dame Pattie Menzies, wife of the Prime Minister, named the ship P.J. Adams. It was the first oil tanker built in Australia and was nearly twice the size of the largest ship previously built in the country. Lloyd Borrett, 5 years, 5 months old, was out at "The Basin" near the Whyalla Yacht Club to view the launch. He is with his Dad, Dean Borrett, sister, and cousins Grant and Bruce Farrar in the video. 8mm film by Clarry Saltmarsh of Langhorne Creek, South Australia. Transferred to video by Paul Borrett.
